Overview
Michael Butler’s work needs room to breathe. The website had to present paintings, collections and films with the restraint of a gallery while still giving visitors the context needed to move through a substantial body of work.
The work
We designed an image-led system where artwork remains dominant and the interface stays deliberately quiet. Collections and individual paintings are structured, with multilingual content managed across four languages and flexible support for films, descriptive text and detailed cropped views of individual works.
The result is straightforward to navigate and practical for the studio to maintain as new work is added.
In detail
Typography, spacing and interaction are intentionally restrained. The website acts as a frame rather than a competing visual layer, allowing each collection to establish its own rhythm while the wider archive remains coherent.
Challenge
Create a digital experience capable of holding a large, multilingual body of work without reducing it to a conventional thumbnail catalogue.
Approach
Use generous image scale, controlled typography and a structured content model that separates collections, paintings, films and detailed views while keeping administration manageable.
Build
A bespoke content management system for collections, paintings, films and multilingual content, with responsive artwork presentation, zoom/detail support.
Outcome
A refined platform that puts the artwork first and gives the studio a flexible foundation for new collections, translations, films and deeper artwork detail.
